Public relations are an often overlooked section of marketing, but most companies could benefit from increased sales through the focused application of targeted PR marketing. Perhaps you business is a relative unknown, and people in you local area just don't know about your company or the service it provides. In this instance a clever PR campaign could focus on creating public intrigue in your business, and therefore generate more inquiries.
 
Another common application of PR would be to draw the attention of potential customers away from areas of your business that are perhaps less appealing, by promoting things that your company does which have a positive impact on people or the environment. You will have no doubt seen this type of marketing countless times yourself, perhaps without even realizing it. One such example would be an advert by a company who use vast amounts of wood pulp to create paper products promoting the fact that they plant three trees for each one they fell.
 
PR does not necessarily have to be applied in a reactive manner though, even if there is no negative perception surrounding your business it never hurts to generate positive PR. Imagine that you have just moved house to a new town, and that you read an article in the local newspaper about a local dry cleaning company who's workforce contributed their Saturday morning to cleaning up the duck pond in the local park. A week later you realize that you suit needs cleaning before an important meeting so you Google "Dry Cleaners" in your town only to find out that there are only two dry cleaners in the area, the top result is a company you have never heard of and the second is the one you read about in the paper. Even though the other company ranks higher in Google and therefore should by rights get more clicks, the chances are that in this instance you would make a conscious decision to go with the second company because A. They are familiar to you as you have already heard of them, and B. what you have read about the company presents them in a strong and positive light.
 
Many small companies see PR as the realm of large blue chip corporations and not a form of marketing that the average small company can expect to be able to afford. This is not true, PR need not be vastly expensive, and much like any other form of marketing can be scaled to target a small geographic location for very reasonable costs.
 
So the next time you are allocating your annual marketing budget try to think outside the box and perhaps approach a few reputable PR companies in your area, you might be pleasantly surprised at the return on investment your PR campaign realizes, and end up wondering why you never thought of it sooner.
